How praying the rosary can change the way we live...

Praying the rosary does not come automatically to us.  We need to learn the words.  The focus of the rosary is prayer.  It is a device meant to help us to pray.  We all know what the actual rosary beads look like, but we do not all know the words of the prayers that the beads are meant to evoke.

Learning the words is the beginning of the wonderful experience of prayer that the rosary brings to us.  They are simple words, easily learned.  The repetition of the prayers on each bead helps us to learn them so that we do not struggle long with the mere words and can focus our attention on the mysteries.

Each day the rosary lifts up a central set of events in the Christian faith.  They are:
The conception and birth of Jesus- called the Joyful mysteries
The life and ministry of Jesus- Called the Luminous mysteries.
The suffering and death of Jesus- Called the Sorrowful mysteries.
The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus- Called the Glorious Mysteries.

Jesus told us that we ought always to pray and not to doubt.
In his own life, Jesus displayed the life of prayer, regularly praying both formally in synagogue and informally in daily life.
It is remarked by his apostles that Jesus would often go apart from them in order to pray.  The rosary is a very helpful device so that we can do what our Lord Jesus tells us to do, namely, pray.

People often say, I will pray about this or that.  They tell other people that they will pray for them.  But when they examine themselves they see that they do not pray.  They say that they will and they are sincere in the intention, but the proof of the intention is the actual doing of it.

What good is it for a person to say that they will wash the dishes, take out the trash and attend to work but never do any of the three?  Obviously, the intention is not the deed.  What's the old saying? - " The way to hell is paved with good intentions."

  • The rosary helps us to pray by reminding us.  We carry around the rosary beads with us and when we see them or touch them we are reminded to pray.
  • The rosary helps us by giving us a set of ready prayers.  Often we want to pray but we cannot form our minds around what should be the thoughts and words of our prayer.
  • The rosary helps us focus and not be distracted.  Prayer requires focus.  Yes, we can say a short prayer such as, God help me, or thank you Jesus.  These are important and worthy prayers.   Concentrated and focus prayer is more difficult to accomplish.  The rosary helps us to be successful in concentrated and focused praying.
